Forest Floor Recovery Index: Boreal Mixedwood(圖1)-速報App

The Forest Floor Recovery Index: Boreal Mixedwood App was developed by the Canadian Forest Service, Natural Resources Canada and is available in English and French. It aims to assess forest ecosystem recovery using changes in forest floor properties during stand development following reclamation in the Boreal Mixedwood region of Alberta. The Forest Floor Recovery Index: Boreal Mixedwood app presents a simplified forest floor classification system, using photographs and descriptions to illustrate examples of 19 forest floor types, differentiated according to composition and dominant organic soil horizons. It provides users with guidance in data compilation, determination of an index of recovery through comparison of site data with reference data, and recommendations for tree biomass inputs needed for natural forest floor development. This approach provides a useful tool for monitoring recovery of forest sites that have been disturbed and subsequently reclaimed following oil sands development activities.

An instructions page explains use of the app, and describes forest floors in the boreal forest, organic and mineral horizons in the forest floor, horizon groups, material groups, forest floors on reclaimed well pads, effects of earthworms, and how to sample. Users can import a “plan” containing site information known before sampling and export compiled data. The primary function of the app is accessible through the button “Record Samples and View Results.” After creating a new site in the app, selecting the ecosite and the number of years since reclamation, users can record data for each sample on the “Enter Sample” page which includes thickness, material group, horizon group, sample photos, and additional comments. The “Enter Sample” page provides example images of the different horizon groups and material groups, so users can visually compare their samples to a range of forest floor types occurring in stands originating from natural disturbances (e.g., wildfire). As the data for each sample is entered into the app, an index score of 1, 2, or 3 is calculated automatically, indicating how well the forest floor is recovering compared to a site of similar age and ecosite type that originated from a natural disturbance. When sampling is completed and the data entered, guidelines are provided for tree biomass inputs needed for natural forest floor development, adjusted according to the index score calculated for the site. Modeled predictions from the Carbon Budget Model of the Canadian Forest Sector (CBM-CFS3) were used to generate recommendations for the tree biomass inputs.
